The ancient shrine built in 1276 is well-known for its multiple appearances in the popular manga "Kochikame" (《烏龍派出所》).
📖 Details
Kameari Katori Shrine is located near JR Kameari Station. From the station, head southeast for about 300 meters, then cross the main road (Kan-nana-dori) to reach it. The torii gates along the way lead to the shrine's back entrance, known as the "Kōsando," but it is recommended to enter the shrine from the "Omotesando" next to the large shopping center "ARIO." The pair of stone-carved guardian turtles known as "Koma-game" flanking the torii gates are the shrine's landmarks.
Kameari Katori Shrine was established in 1276 and is a revered ancient shrine in the Kameari area, deeply trusted by the local community. The shrine is also well-known for its frequent appearances in the manga "Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo," which is set in the Kameari area. Along the Omotesando, there is a statue of the manga's main character, "A-Ryo," and the shrine itself is one of the spots on the statue pilgrimage map. Therefore, the shrine often attracts crowds looking for the A-Ryo statue. It is worth mentioning that the festival scenes in the manga are based on the "Reitaisai," held every September at Kameari Katori Shrine.
Within the shrine grounds, several small shrines, including "Dōso Shrine," have historically protected the Kameari area. Additionally, the "Kaguraden," which was relocated and rebuilt from a worship hall of the Edo period, is a valuable structure that has survived disasters such as earthquakes and air raids. Furthermore, there is a café called "La Rose des Japonais" next to the path in the shrine's back courtyard. Cafés within shrine grounds are quite rare in Japan, and from the indoor or terrace seating, you can enjoy a view of the hall and the entire shrine. The café is conveniently located on the way back to Kameari Station, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy delicious desserts after their visit. (※ The café's operating hours are from 10 AM to 7 PM, and it is closed every Tuesday.)
