About Kanagawa Prefectural Office Main Building

Known by the nickname "Tower of the King," it is an important cultural site designated by the nation.

Details

The Kanagawa Prefectural Office Main Building is a nationally designated important cultural asset, widely known by the nickname "King's Tower." Along with the "Queen's Tower" of the Yokohama Customs Main Building and the "Jack's Tower" of the Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall, it is collectively referred to as the "Three Towers of Yokohama." Standing at approximately 49 meters tall, it is one of the symbolic landmarks of Yokohama Port. This building embodies the popular architectural style of the time it was constructed (early Showa period), specifically the Wright style (similar to the old Imperial Hotel and other buildings), and is adorned with Art Deco elements throughout. The tower combines Western architectural styles with Japanese influences, making it a pioneering example of Japanese-Western fusion architecture. The current building is the fourth generation of the prefectural office, rebuilt in Showa 3 (1928) after the third generation collapsed and was damaged during the Kanto Earthquake. In the sixth-floor Kanagawa Prefectural Office Main Building History Exhibition Room, there are explanatory panels and audio guides that introduce the four generations of the building's history and its charm. From the observation deck on the roof, visitors can enjoy close views of the Queen's Tower (Yokohama Customs) and Jack's Tower (Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall), as well as distant views of Yokohama Port and the Minato Mirai area.

Highlights

The "King's Tower," which symbolizes the prefectural office, is one of the three towers in Yokohama. The historical exhibition room on the 6th floor and the rooftop observation deck are open for free entry on weekdays. At night, the lights will be illuminated.
