About Kasumi Kaikan Memorial Learning Institute MUSEUM
Collect up to 250,000 pieces of information related to royalty and nobility.
Details
Founded in 1877 (Meiji 10), Gakushuin was originally an educational institution for the children of nobility. In 1949 (Showa 24), Gakushuin University was established, and in 1975 (Showa 50), the affiliated research institution "Gakushuin University Archives" was created to collect and display historical materials related to the imperial family and nobility. The "Gakushuin University Archives" will be renovated in March 2025 and renamed the "Kasumigaseki Memorial Gakushuin Museum," dedicated to collecting up to 250,000 precious historical materials and artworks, including ancient documents, paintings, and crafts.
The first floor features a permanent exhibition room that introduces the history of Gakushuin. It includes historical materials such as school bags, pianos, a historical timeline, and a letter left by the 10th Gakushuin president, Nogi Maresuke, to the 18th Prime Minister, Terauchi. Next to the permanent exhibition room, there is a special exhibition room that hosts various themed exhibitions periodically.
The building was originally the university library, designed by Kunio Maekawa, who is known as a pioneer of modernist architecture. The concrete exterior, characteristic of Maekawa's architectural style, is also noteworthy.
