One of the Kaga Onsen towns, located by the shores of Lake Shibayama, which offers a view of the sacred peak, Mount Hakusan. Here, you can enjoy hot springs and take leisurely walks while admiring the beautiful lake surface that is said to change colors seven times a day.
There are many attractions worth visiting in the area, such as the "Floating Hall Benten," which is built in the center of Lake Shibayama and has deep connections to the ancient legend of "Dragon God and Girl" from Katayamazu, the "Hanakan," which was once a venue for Geisha performances and shamisen practice, and "Aizenji," commonly known as "Oyakushi." Additionally, at the "Snow Science Museum," commemorating the world's first scientist to create artificial crystal snow, Ukichiro Nakaya, you can also experience making ice crystal pendants.
The "Katayamazu Onsen Sōyu," located in the Katayamazu Onsen district, is a glass building standing by the lakeside. Here, you can soak in the hot springs while enjoying the beautiful scenery, and there is also a scenic café with large glass windows. Furthermore, in the central resting area of the hot spring town, "Sunazoko Park," there is a free foot bath.
In addition to activities like Yakatabune (houseboats) and cycling, experiential activities such as "Akiko Mud Dyeing" and "Mizuhiki Knot" are also very popular. Every August, a multi-day fireworks festival is held on the lake, with colorful fireworks illuminating the night sky. On the other hand, from late October to early March, you can also see swan geese coming here to escape the cold winter at Lake Shibayama.
