About Katsushika Shibamata Torajirō Memorial Museum
A popular attraction within Shibamata Park, perfectly recreating the worldview of the movie "Tora-san's True Love."
Details
The Katsushika Shibamata Torajiro Memorial Museum is a popular attraction within Shibamata Park. From Shibamata Station, walk along the Daishihō Temple approach, pass by the Shibamata Daishihō Temple, and after a three-minute walk, you will arrive at the picturesque Shibamata Park by the Edogawa River. This museum showcases the worldview of the film "Otoko wa Tsurai yo" (男はつらいよ). In addition to scenes from Torajiro's family dumpling shop "Kurumaya" (車屋), it perfectly recreates the old street atmosphere of Katsushika Shibamata around the 1960s through three-dimensional models and images. The dumpling shop "Kurumaya" was relocated from a film studio of that time. The protagonist Torajiro, nicknamed "Mad Torajiro," drifts around Japan at will throughout the year, but he repeatedly returns to this dumpling shop seeking comfort and warmth from home and family. Inside the museum, there is a 1/16 scale model of "Kurumaya," clearly showing the shop's structure, and you can see Torajiro dozing off on the second floor.
Additionally, the museum displays an old train station reminiscent of Torajiro's wanderings, slow-moving trains, as well as an old suitcase and various items he always carried during his travels. The world depicted in "Otoko wa Tsurai yo" resonates with many Japanese people's nostalgia for their "ideal hometown" and emotional memories of the past, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of Japan's traditional culture and simple human sentiments during their visit.
Highlights
Through a three-dimensional model and imagery, the world of the movie "Tora-san: The Man Who Can't Be Moved" is recreated. The protagonist "Tora-san's" family home and the dumpling shop "Kuruma-ya" have been directly relocated from the film set to this real-life setting. Many famous scenes evoke a sense of familiarity, making visitors feel as if they have returned to their hometown from years past. The old street scenery of Katsushika Shibamata around 1960 is cleverly reproduced using perspective techniques. There are models of the former "Teishakuman Rickshaw Railway" and the slow trains of that time, where visitors can sit in the passenger seats for photo opportunities. A photo area is available for commemorative pictures with "Tora-san" (for a fee). Shibamata Park, located near the memorial hall, is a recommended spot for a leisurely stroll.
