About Koganei City Sewer Experience Museum
It is a rare and valuable facility in Japan that allows access to the actual sewer system.
Details
This facility was built in 1990 to commemorate the achievement of a 100% public sewage system takeover rate in Kodaira City. It uses an audiovisual system and panels to introduce the structure and functions of the sewage system in an easy-to-understand manner, as well as its history from the Edo period to the present. The most distinctive feature is the "Exchange Experience Room" located five floors underground, where visitors can directly enter a sewage pipe that is 25 meters underground. It is quite rare in Japan to access an operational sewage system, allowing visitors to smell the odors and see the color of the wastewater with their own eyes.
In addition, there are large displays to observe the microorganisms that purify sewage, as well as tools and photographs that were actually used in wells in the past. There are many facilities designed for children to learn about sewage systems in a fun and engaging way. Furthermore, there is a display area with comic-like screens showcasing the history of sewage systems from the Edo period to the present. A free lecture aimed at elementary school students is also held once a month.
