About Kuromon Market
The old market in Osaka's Minami district has been the kitchen of Osaka citizens since ancient times, offering a wide variety of seasonal ingredients.
Details
Kuromon Market is located in the southern district of downtown Osaka, and its name comes from the nearby Enmyoji Temple, as the temple's mountain gate is black, leading people to refer to the market close to the temple as "Kuromon Market." It was officially recognized as a market by the Osaka government in 1902 and has been popular as "the kitchen of Osaka" since its opening, becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination in recent years.
Kuromon Market spans seven blocks and is characterized by many specialty shops selling fresh seafood such as eel and fugu. Giant models designed to resemble brown grouper, sea bream, tuna, Ise lobster, crab, fugu, and octopus hang throughout the various blocks, adding a lively and cheerful atmosphere to the market as symbols of Kuromon.
The market is an arcade-style shopping street approximately 580 meters long, lined with about 150 shops on both sides. In addition to specialty stores for fugu and other fresh seafood, there are various types of shops including fruit and vegetable stands, butcher shops, wagashi (Japanese sweets), Western pastries, and restaurants, allowing visitors to experience Japanese food culture just by strolling around. Notably, there is a wide variety of snacks available, including seafood skewers, freshly squeezed juices, and ice cream, making it enjoyable to eat while exploring. Additionally, the shopping street hosts a promotional event called "Saturday Discount Market" every week, where shoppers can find a variety of useful and delicious products and ingredients at great prices.
