🗺️ Kusatsu Onsen Neru no Yu

📝 Introduction

Appreciate the performance of "Yumomi and Dance," the symbol of Kusatsu Onsen.

📖 Details

The "Yumomi" performed at the 熱乃湯 (Yunomi) is a symbolic tourist attraction of the 草津温泉 (Kusatsu Onsen) tradition. The "Yumomi," held in conjunction with the Kusatsu Festival, is a unique method of enjoying the hot springs that was originally practiced by visitors to Kusatsu Onsen. The source of Kusatsu Onsen's hot spring water is approximately 50 degrees Celsius, making it impossible to bathe directly. If water is added to cool it down, it would dilute the effectiveness of the hot spring. Therefore, the practice of "Yumomi" was developed, which involves stirring the hot spring water with a wooden board about 180 centimeters long to bring it down to a suitable bathing temperature. In addition to cooling the water, Yumomi also helps to soften the hot spring water. The Yumomi performance began in Showa 35 (1960), and the building of 熱乃湯 (Yunomi) was renovated in Heisei 27 (2015) into a two-story building in the Taisho Romantic style. At night, when the gas lamps are lit, it adds to the charm of the place. Inside, women dressed in traditional attire perform the Yumomi along with dance performances.
