🗺️ Kyoto City Zoo

📝 Introduction

120 years since its opening! The second oldest zoo in Japan is a great place for citizens to relax.

📖 Details

The Kyoto City Zoo is located in a corner of Okazaki Park. It opened in 1903 (Meiji 36) and is the second oldest zoo in Japan, following Ueno Zoo. After renovations, it reopened in 2015 and celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2023. It serves as a recreational space for the citizens of Kyoto and is loved by people of all ages. At the Kyoto City Zoo, visitors can observe a variety of animals in their natural behaviors. In the "African Savanna Zone," which resembles a tropical grassland, you can see giraffes and zebras; the "Monkey World" area, designed with poles and ropes to mimic tropical rainforest trees, allows you to observe gorillas in a nearly primal ecological setting; and the "Elephant Forest Zone" offers a chance to see Asian elephants bathing and to learn about the differences in the lives of male and female elephants. Additionally, the "Beast World Zone" features an enclosure called "Overhang," where you can watch tigers, leopards, and the endangered Tsushima leopard cat as they stroll by from an overhead walkway, providing an exhilarating experience. The "Fairy Tale Kingdom Zone," which houses animals closely related to humans, such as goats and guinea pigs, is also a must-see area. Moreover, the zoo includes an animal library with about 7,000 books related to animals, picture books, and photo collections, along with a café, making it a great place to relax. In spring, 160 cherry blossom trees bloom, making it a popular cherry blossom viewing spot, and it is conveniently accessible from tourist attractions like Heian Shrine and Nanzen-ji Temple.
