About Kyoto OHARIBAKO
Experience making traditional Japanese craft hairpins.
Details
The "Japanese Fabric Flower" specialty store, which also serves as a workshop, is located near Daigoji Temple. Japanese Fabric Flowers are handmade traditional Japanese hair ornaments that have been passed down since the mid-Edo period. This craft involves folding and pinching small pieces of fabric to create shapes like flowers and birds, which are then adorned on combs or hairpins.
The "Japanese Fabric Flower Experience" is held in a standalone Kyoto machiya behind the store, where participants use hand-dyed habutae fabric to create authentic hairpins. Over 10,000 people have participated in this popular experience. With careful explanations from the staff, beginners can join with confidence.
Participants can choose from five types of flower shapes, colors, and combinations to create a unique personal hair accessory. The experience takes about one and a half hours, and you can take your creation home the same day. Reservations must be made at least one business day in advance, and it is recommended to book a few days ahead for the best experience.
