About Lake Ikeda
Kyushu's largest lake, featuring the majestic "Satsuma Fuji" and a beautiful landscape interwoven with seasonal flowers.
Details
Ikeda Lake, located in the southeastern part of the Satsuma Peninsula, has a circumference of 15 kilometers and a depth of 233 meters, making it the largest lake in Kyushu. This lake is a volcanic crater lake formed over 5,000 years ago during volcanic activity, and it has taken its current shape after six eruptions in the surrounding area.
Kaimondake, which is beloved by the locals, is also known as "Satsuma Fuji." The view of Kaimondake towering behind Ikeda Lake is not to be missed. Additionally, the lakeside flower garden features seasonal flowers, with different plants cultivated each year, allowing visitors to enjoy the beautiful blooms that change with the seasons. In spring, you can see poppies and flowering radishes; in summer, sunflowers; in autumn, cosmos and marigolds; and in winter, rapeseed flowers.
Various activities guided by instructors are available along the lakeshore, such as kayaking, which beginners can easily challenge, and jet boating, which offers a thrilling speed experience. The Ikeda Lake tourist facility park "IKEDAKO PAX" opened in 2022. It features a café where visitors can enjoy coffee, desserts, or light meals, and the open-air waterfront deck and grassy plaza are also very popular viewing spots.
