Lake OKOTANPE (オコタンペ湖) is located within Shikotsu-Toya National Park, approximately 7 kilometers northwest of Lake Shikotsu. It sits at an elevation of 600 meters, 300 meters higher than Lake Shikotsu, and is surrounded by Mount Eniwa (1,320 meters) and Mount Iwa (1,318 meters), quietly rising amidst the remote mountain forests.
Lake OKOTANPE has a circumference of 5 kilometers and a maximum depth of 21.1 meters, formed as a dammed lake from volcanic ejecta of Mount Eniwa. The color of the lake changes with the seasons, the angle of sunlight, and the viewing perspective, displaying a marvelous array of hues such as emerald green and cobalt blue. It is known as one of the "Three Great Secret Lakes of Hokkaido," alongside Lake Shinonome in Kamishihoro and Lake Tōnai in Ayakawa.
Surrounded by a primeval forest of coniferous and deciduous trees, it has been designated as a forest ecosystem protection area. There are no hiking trails leading to the lakeshore, but a viewpoint is available along Route 78, where visitors can admire the beautiful scenery of Lake OKOTANPE.

Getting There
(1) Take the Hokkaido Chuo Bus from JR "Chitose" Station towards Lake Shikotsu for about 44 minutes, and get off at "Lake Shikotsu" Station. It takes about 25 minutes by car. (2) It takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes to drive from the Chitose interchange on the Dōō Expressway.
