About Lake Rara (然別湖)
Nestled in the majestic nature, the Sky Lake is located at the highest point in Hokkaido.
Details
The only natural lake in Daisetsuzan National Park, located at an elevation of 810 meters, is known as the "Lake of Heaven." This lake is a dammed lake formed approximately 30,000 years ago due to volcanic eruptions that blocked rivers, surrounded by small volcanoes such as Tsubakiyama and Shirakumayama.
Nearby, you can find the living fossil Ezo-narikawa, which has inhabited the area since the Ice Age, as well as precious wildlife like the white-tailed eagle and the heron. On the northern side of the lake is Benten Island, and the reflection of Tsubakiyama on the eastern side of the lake resembles lips, earning it the nickname "Lip Mountain," which is a local symbol.
This area offers a variety of outdoor activities, including canoeing, inflatable kayaking, and zip-lining. In winter, when the lake freezes, there is a dreamlike village called "Lake Shikaribetsu Ice Village" made of ice and snow, and visitors can also enjoy ice fishing by drilling holes in the ice.
