About Lake Towada
A breathtaking landscape created by nature and the passage of time.
Details
Lake Towada spans across Towada City in Aomori Prefecture and Kosaka Town in Kazuno District, Akita Prefecture. It is a caldera lake formed by volcanic activity from the Towada Volcano approximately 200,000 years ago. Among Japan's lakes, it ranks 12th in area and 3rd in maximum depth at 327 meters. The Oirase Stream, which flows from the lake, is also designated as a national special scenic spot and natural monument.
The best time to enjoy activities around Lake Towada is from spring to autumn. There are various activities available, including sightseeing boats to appreciate the beauty of the lake and nature, as well as sea kayaking and boat tours.
Around the southern part of Lake Towada, near Yasumiya, you will find not only the boarding point for sightseeing boats but also a concentration of accommodation facilities, restaurants, and souvenir shops. The bronze statue "Statue of the Maiden," created by Takamura Kōtarō, is also located here, making it a popular base for travelers exploring Lake Towada. For those interested in outdoor activities such as sea kayaking and hiking in the Towada Mountains, it is recommended to start from the eastern lakeside area. If you wish to overlook the panoramic view of Lake Towada, the Takizawa Observation Deck and Shimeitei Observation Deck on the western lakeside are the best choices.
