About Le Shui Yuan (Pleasant Water Garden)

Located in the business district, enjoy the beauty of the seasonal landscape in a Japanese garden with a tea room.

Details

Quietly standing in a corner of the office district near Hakata Station is a Japanese garden. Built in 1906 (Meiji 39), it was originally the villa of Hakata merchant Shimosawa Zen'emon, who contributed greatly to the development of Fukuoka and Hakata. After the war, it was converted into an inn, and in 1995 (Heisei 7), the city of Fukuoka transformed it into a garden. In front of the tea room is a pond-style strolling garden, where visitors can walk and enjoy the lush greenery surrounding the pond. Seasonal flowers and plants, such as the weeping cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves, allow visitors to experience the changing seasons, making it an attractive destination regardless of the time of year. Despite being in the city, it is enveloped in a tranquil atmosphere, as if time has stopped here. The garden features the reconstructed tea room "Rakusuian," built by Shinjō, along with three connected rooms suitable for large tea gatherings. There is also a plaza in the garden where charming outdoor tea ceremonies can be held. When there are no tea ceremony events, "Rakusuian" offers tea service, allowing guests to enjoy matcha while taking in the beautiful garden scenery.
