About Matsumoto Castle
The black-and-white castle and the Northern Alps complement each other, creating a picturesque and beautiful landscape.
Details
Matsumoto Castle was constructed between 1593 and 1594 and is currently the oldest existing five-story six-floor tenshu (keep) castle in Japan, designated as a national treasure. (Note: A five-story six-floor castle refers to a structure that appears to have five floors externally but has six floors internally.)
The castle's striking white walls and black skirt boards create a vivid color contrast, enhancing the overall grandeur and majesty of the structure. As a symbol of Nagano Prefecture, it is beloved by the local community. Matsumoto Castle showcases its unique charm through the changing seasons. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom; in summer, lush greenery flourishes; in autumn, the leaves turn vibrant colors; and in winter, the snow creates a picturesque scene. No matter when you visit, you can enjoy different beautiful landscapes.
During the year, Matsumoto Castle hosts nighttime illuminations during events. The sight of the tenshu illuminated at night, reflecting the cherry blossoms, is quite enchanting. The reflection of Matsumoto Castle on the surface of the moat adds a beautiful and dreamlike mysterious quality, making it a must-visit spot for castle enthusiasts.
