About Minobu-san Kuon-ji Temple (身延山 久遠寺)
An ancient temple famous for its beautiful weeping cherry blossoms.
Details
Kyōon-ji has a long history and is said to have been founded by the Buddhist saint Nichiren, the founder of the Nichiren sect, while he was building a temple on Mount Minobu. Mount Minobu rises to an elevation of 1,153 meters and serves as the head temple of the Nichiren sect.
The weeping cherry tree (shidarezakura) in Kyōon-ji is quite famous, with an estimated age of over 400 years. Every spring, the branches that droop toward the ground are adorned with blooming pink cherry blossoms. To reach the main hall from the three gates, visitors must climb the "Bodhi Steps," which consist of 287 steep stone steps that evoke a sense of reverence. Those confident in their physical stamina might want to give it a try.
Additionally, it takes about 7 minutes to reach the top station of Mount Minobu via the aerial tramway from Kyōon-ji. Visitors can pay a visit to the "Okunoin" located at the mountain's summit and enjoy panoramic views of the magnificent natural scenery from the observation deck.
Highlights
The most beautiful time for cherry blossoms is from late March to early April each year. It is recommended for travelers who have difficulty climbing stairs to use the elevator. At the summit, there is a souvenir shop selling the local specialty "Minobu Dango" (みのぶだんご).
