Details
*Due to long-term maintenance work, the museum is expected to reopen in 2026.*
Standing by the Hirose River flowing through Sendai City, the museum consists of the main building and the annex "Tadayoshi Sato Memorial Museum" located to the west of the main building. The Tadayoshi Sato Memorial Museum showcases the works of sculptor Tadayoshi Sato, who was born in Miyagi Prefecture. The main building was designed by the modern architectural master Kunio Maekawa.
Inside the museum, there are numerous works from the Meiji Restoration that have deep connections to Miyagi Prefecture and the Tohoku region, featuring major works by renowned painters such as Ryusei Kishida and Yuichi Takahashi. The exhibition also includes early original illustrations from the representative monthly picture book "Kodomo no Tomo" from the "Kuri to Kura" series, which are very popular among children.
The Miyagi Prefectural Museum of Art also displays overseas works, with a rich collection of German modern art pieces by Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. The sculpture garden on the premises allows for leisurely strolls, providing a relaxing moment while appreciating the art.
