About Mother Island
The World Natural Heritage site "Ogasawara Islands" is home to rare flora and fauna, as well as breathtaking scenery on its small islands.
Details
The World Natural Heritage site "Ogasawara Islands" is located about 1,050 kilometers southeast of Tokyo. Among the more than 30 small islands, the southernmost island, Chichijima, has regular ferry services. It takes about 24 hours by boat from Tokyo to reach Chichijima, and then another 2 hours by connecting ferry to get to the southernmost island, Haha-jima. There are only 4 to 5 ferry services to Chichijima each week, and reservations are not possible. Despite the extremely inconvenient transportation, visitors can see the unique wildlife, plants, and stunning landscapes of Haha-jima.
On Mount Nyubō, there are endemic plants such as Haha-jima peonies and seaweed trees, as well as the nationally designated special natural monument, the Ogasawara bush warbler. The view of Chichijima from this location is truly breathtaking. At the southernmost point of Haha-jima, "Ko-Fuji," visitors can enjoy "the first sunrise in Japan" on New Year's Day. Other attractions include the "East Port Searchlight Battery," a war relic, and the "Ross Museum," which introduces the history of Haha-jima. Everywhere is picturesque scenery, well worth a visit. Some areas require accompaniment by a guide, so please pay attention to the relevant regulations during your visit.
