About Myojin Pond
An energy spot located within the sacred area of Suwa Shrine, the beautiful scenery is not to be missed.
Details
Myojin Pond is located in the "Kamikochi" area, surrounded by coniferous forests. To reach Myojin Pond, which is formed by "Ichi no Ike" and "Ni no Ike," you can take either of the two paths along the left or right bank of the Azusa River. It takes about an hour to walk from Kappa Bridge to Myojin Pond, making it a moderately challenging walking route.
As suggested by its old name "Mirror Pond," the surface of "Ichi no Ike" is clear as a mirror, reflecting the surrounding scenery. Here, you can enjoy the changing views with the seasons, such as fresh greenery in spring or autumn leaves, and occasionally spot wild birds like mallards and mandarin ducks swimming gracefully in the pond. The water surface often shrouded in mist adds to the mysterious atmosphere, creating a beauty that invigorates the spirit.
Surrounding the pond is the sacred area of "Hodaka Shrine," which enshrines the deity Hodaka no Mikoto, making it a popular energy spot. In addition to the main shrine by the pond, there is also a worship area at the end of the extended walkway over the pond. Every year on October 8th, a ceremony called "Myojin Pond Boat Festival" is held to express gratitude for the safety of the mountains and forests. During the festival, you can witness recitations and dances, as well as priests dressed in Heian period clothing parading on boats across the pond.
