About Nagamachi Samurai Residences Ruins

The samurai of the Kaga Domain once lived here, strolling along the traditional streets lined with earthen walls.

Details

The area retains the ruins of the residences of Kaga clan samurai and mid-ranking warriors. The stone-paved paths and the continuous earthen walls make you feel as if you have traveled back in time to the Edo period. Nearby, there are shops selling traditional crafts and dining establishments, allowing you to enjoy a pleasant stroll. The ancient Ohnosho water, which has been used for people's livelihoods since ancient times, still flows through this area. In winter, "Kakugake" (covering the earthen walls with dried straw) appears to protect the walls from damage caused by accumulated snow. The charm of Nagamachi, where ancient traditional streets blend with modern life, showcases the unique atmosphere that carries on the samurai culture. Some residences are open to the public, allowing visitors to explore the luxurious interiors and gardens. The "Buke Yashiki Ato Nomura Family" is said to be the residence of the 11th head of the Umakai group, with a history of serving in public office. The garden, fed by Ohnosho water, and the beautiful wide room featuring landscape paintings and intricate carvings are definitely worth seeing. You can also enjoy traditional sweets while gazing at the garden from the tea room. Additionally, the "Former Kaga Clan Samurai Takada Family Site" offers a restored longhouse gate from the clan's administrative period for public viewing. Inside, there is an impressive pond-style strolling garden, where you can enjoy beautiful scenery while walking through the garden.

Highlights
