About Nakamachi Street
On the ancient streets lined with sea cucumber warehouses, enjoy dining and shopping.
Details
Nakamachi Street once thrived as the castle town of the national treasure "Matsumoto Castle," preserving many warehouse buildings from the Edo period to the Taisho era. The streets lined with traditional Japanese wall styles, such as the "Namako" (sea cucumber) wall warehouses, are filled with a rich historical atmosphere, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Nakamachi Street also gathers several elegant folk art and craft shops, making it a great place to purchase Matsumoto's unique souvenirs. There are also numerous cafes, dessert shops, and restaurants, so you won't have trouble finding places to dine and relax. Additionally, from April to December, a morning market is held every Sunday, where several local farms sell seasonal vegetables and wild plants. Some farms even sell out within ten minutes of opening, earning it the title of "the shortest operating morning market in Japan," so it's recommended to arrive before 9:30 AM.
Moreover, there is a multifunctional space called "Kurashikku-kan" (蔵シック館) for hosting various events, and the "Weights and Measures Museum" (度量衡資料館), which transformed a former measuring instrument shop into a museum, among other nearby tourist attractions.
Highlights
The sea cucumber warehouses stand tall, exuding the ancient charm of the old street. Crafts shops, cafes, and restaurants are lined up in succession. The Sunday morning market is known as "the shortest operating hours market in all of Japan," so it's recommended to arrive early.
