About Nantai Mountain
Standing facing Lake Zhongshan, it is a popular hiking destination.
Details
Standing on the northern shore of Lake Chūzenji at an elevation of 2,486 meters, Mount Nantai is one of the "100 Famous Mountains of Japan." In the second year of the Ten'ō era (782), the monk Shōdō became the first person to successfully reach the summit, and since then, Mount Nantai has become a renowned peak representing the Nikko mountain range, deeply revered by the public.
The hike from the trailhead at an elevation of 1,200 meters to the summit takes about 3.5 to 4 hours, while descending from the summit takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, making it a popular spot for day hikes. The entire mountain is part of the grounds of the Nikkō Futarasan Shrine, and an entrance fee must be paid at the Futarasan Shrine's Chūgū Shrine at the trailhead before entering the mountain.
The mountain is open for climbing every year from April 25 to November 11; climbing is not permitted during other periods. Entrance is accepted from 6 AM to 12 PM, so please pay special attention to this. From July 31 to August 7 each year, a "Climbing Worship Festival" is held, allowing night climbing on designated days, attracting many climbers to the summit for worship at the sunrise. Additionally, taking a bus from Tōbu Nikkō Station to the Futarasan Shrine's Chūgū Shrine is more convenient.
