About Nanyang Shopping Street JAN JAN Alley (Kang Kang Alley)

Not only are there various delicacies like skewers and udon noodles, but there are also places for both adults and children to enjoy, such as Go, Shogi, and old-fashioned shooting ranges.

Details

Nanyang Shopping Street, also known as "JANJAN Yokocho," is said to have earned its name after World War II when shopkeepers played shamisen and taiko drums to attract customers, resulting in the constant sound of rhythmic drumming throughout the day. Today, this arcade-style shopping street, approximately 180 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, is lined with many unique small shops. The shopping street features a variety of popular and affordable eateries, including a deep-fried skewers shop with a sign that says "Only dip once!" a refined sushi restaurant, standing izakayas, and udon noodle shops. There are also Go and Shogi clubs available. The area where JANJAN Yokocho is located is known as "Shinsekai," the birthplace of the famous shogi player Sakatani Mikiji. In this place with deep ties to the game, many people still enjoy playing Go or Shogi in the clubs. The crowds watching the games through the glass windows are also a unique sight of the shopping street. Additionally, JANJAN Yokocho is home to "Hihokan," the largest public entertainment shooting range in Japan. Visitors can enjoy classic games like "Smart Ball," where players shoot balls into holes on tables. There are also experiences available for traditional Japanese games such as shuriken throwing, ring toss, and ball throwing, ensuring fun for both adults and children.
