About National Museum of History and Folklore

A must-see for history enthusiasts, Japan's largest museum.

Details

Japan's largest national museum of history showcases the history and culture of various periods in Japan. The museum opened in March 1983 at a corner of the Sakura Castle ruins in Sakura City, Chiba Prefecture. Covering approximately 130,000 square meters, with a total building area of about 38,000 square meters, it is a grand hall of history. As a joint research institution with universities, the museum conducts research in collaboration with researchers from domestic and international universities and displays the results. There are about 10,000 exhibits in the museum, including physical materials and restored models from studies in history, archaeology, and folklore. The museum is divided into six exhibition halls based on different eras and themes, allowing visitors to gain an in-depth understanding of the lifestyles and cultures established by the Japanese people in the past. Additionally, the museum offers views of the seasonal natural scenery of the Sakura Castle ruins, which is also one of its highlights. The museum also features a "Living Plant Garden," which systematically cultivates and displays various plants that have long supported the lives and culture of the Japanese people.
