Originating from the highest peak in western Japan, Mount Ishizuchi, it flows approximately 124 kilometers through Ehime Prefecture and Kochi Prefecture, and is one of the "Three Major Rivers of Shikoku." It has been repeatedly recognized as having the best water quality in Japan, comparable to the clear waters of resort beaches, and is renowned for its unparalleled deep blue color known as "Niyodo Blue," attracting many tourists who come to witness its beauty. The locations where "Niyodo Blue" can be seen are mostly in the upstream areas, with "Niko-buchi" (笑淵), "Ankyo Valley" (安居溪谷), and "Nakatsu Valley" (中津溪谷) being the most recommended viewing spots. The way to enjoy the scenery varies by season and weather, so it is advisable to check the location and weather conditions before setting out. There are many water activities available locally, including stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) with crystal-clear inflatable kayaks, zip-lining over the Iwayagawa Valley, and guided tours. You can also experience riverside barbecues or relax in a hot spring. Nearby, you can find Yokokurayama, where glowing mushrooms and numerous fireflies can be seen, as well as a submerged bridge that sinks below the water level during high water, along with several other attractions such as sediment control dams and waterfalls.
