About Numatare Terrace Shopping Street

The old market's retro longhouses have been reborn, transformed into a brand new nostalgic shopping street.

Details

The Numata District of Niigata City, located near the mouth of the Shinano River, has historically thrived as a port town. After experiencing a decline in prosperity, the old Numata Market, which had its iron gates closed, was renovated in 2015 and transformed into the "Numata Terrace Shopping Street." The contrast between the retro Showa-era streetscape and trendy shops creates a unique atmosphere that appeals to customers of all ages. In addition to the fruit and vegetable shops and izakayas that have been operating since the Numata Market era, the shopping street features cafes, lifestyle shops, clothing stores, as well as pottery, glass, and jewelry workshops, totaling around 30 different types of stores. An early market is held on the first Sunday of each month from April to November, and a winter market takes place on the first Sunday from December to March. The signature product of the shopping street is the "Numa Cat Yaki," shaped like the local cats commonly seen around. The dough, made from rice flour, has a chewy texture, and the fillings include flavors like red bean paste and cream, making it perfect as a snack while strolling or as a takeaway gift. Business hours and holidays vary by store. Most shops are closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so if you want to explore more stores, it is recommended to visit on Fridays or weekends. Most shops will be open during events like the early market held on the first Sunday of each month. Since stores may close unexpectedly, be sure to check the official website of the shopping street or the social media pages of individual stores for confirmation.

Highlights
