About Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium
The only deep-sea specialty aquarium in Japan where you can see frozen specimens of the coelacanth.
Details
Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium (Coelacanth Museum) is located near Numazu Port in Shizuoka Prefecture, about a 15-minute bus ride from JR Numazu Station. This is a very rare aquarium in the world, specializing in the exhibition of various peculiar and rare deep-sea creatures, and it is the aquarium in Japan with the largest number of deep-sea species on display.
One of the main attractions is the coelacanth, known as a "living fossil." The aquarium showcases five frozen and taxidermied specimens of coelacanths, which are extremely rare worldwide. The frozen specimens retain the original texture and color of the coelacanth's mouth and scales, providing a realistic experience that cannot be found anywhere else. Additionally, the aquarium displays fish from Suruga Bay, Japan's deepest bay at a depth of 2,500 meters, as well as various rare deep-sea creatures collected from around the world.
Although there are no animal performances like in other aquariums, simply observing unique and rare marine life such as the giant isopod and the flatfish octopus is already fascinating, and the environment filled with the mystery of the deep sea makes it a memorable experience.
In the museum shop, you can purchase merchandise such as plush toys of coelacanths, the popular giant isopod, and flatfish octopus, as well as various snacks. The dining establishments and shops within the port area also offer discount services. After visiting the deep-sea fish exhibits, you can enjoy seafood dishes here.
