📝 Introduction
It is a nationally important traditional building preservation area, known as the "Little Kyoto of Kyushu."
📖 Details
The Obijō Shitamachi was established in 1588 (Tenshō 16) by Itō Suhei, who was rewarded with the land by Toyotomi Hideyoshi for his contributions to pacifying Kyushu. For 280 years, until the abolition of the feudal domains and establishment of prefectures, it prospered as the city of the Obihan Itō clan, which had a revenue of 51,000 koku (1 koku is equivalent to the amount of rice needed to feed one adult for a year). The area preserves the ruins of Obijō, samurai residences, and old warehouses, and it was the first in Kyushu to be designated as an important traditional building preservation area, earning the nickname "Little Kyoto of Kyushu."
The entire Shitamachi has many highlights worth seeing. These include the Obijō Ōtemon gate, restored in 1978 (Shōwa 53), the Obijō Historical Museum, which provides insights into the history of the Itō family, and the Yochōkan, the residence of the Itō family.
Additionally, Obii is the birthplace of Komura Jutarō, a notable diplomat from the Meiji era. The Komura Memorial Hall, which displays materials related to Komura Jutarō, and his birthplace are also attractions worth visiting. These facilities require an admission fee, so it is recommended to purchase a combined ticket if you wish to visit them together.
Local famous dishes include the unique omelet "Atsuyaki Tamago" and "Obi Tempura," which has a texture similar to Satsuma-age. There is also a paid walking map called "Ayumi-chan Map" that allows you to enjoy local delicacies and products while exploring. The merchant town street, lined with shops built from Obii cedar and retaining its historical appearance, is also a must-visit spot.
