About Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observation Deck
From the hill of the mountain castle ruins, gaze upon the World Heritage site "Shirakawa-go."
Details
The Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observation Deck is a popular tourist spot where you can overlook "Shirakawa-go" from atop a hill. Ogimachi Castle was built on a hill about 60 meters high and is a small mountain castle measuring approximately 60 meters east to west and 50 meters north to south, with remnants such as earthen walls still visible today.
The thatched-roof gassho-zukuri buildings are scattered throughout the tranquil rural landscape, and the nostalgic scenery of the Ogimachi village was registered as a World Heritage site in 1995. The thatched-roof gassho-zukuri architecture, which symbolizes Japan's rural landscape, was created by our ancestors who pooled their wisdom and ingenuity to build structures that could withstand harsh winters and heavy snowfall. Not only can you closely admire these well-designed houses that support the villagers' lives, but the view from the hilltop observation deck is even more captivating.
In spring, the landscape is adorned with delicate pink cherry blossoms; in summer, it is surrounded by refreshing greenery; and in winter, it is covered in a soft blanket of white snow. The scenery that unfolds with the changing seasons from the observation deck is breathtaking and unforgettable. There is a paid shuttle bus running from Ogimachi village to the Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observation Deck, and you can also walk along a relatively gentle mountain path, which takes about 30 minutes.
