About Onoto no Seto
There is a legend that has been passed down for over 800 years about Taira no Kiyomori digging the strait. The scene is characterized by the intertwining of passing ships and the picturesque scenery of the Setouchi towns.
Details
The Onodoshin Strait is located between Kogoya-cho in Kure City and Kurahashijima. It is said that over 800 years ago, in 1162, the then-ruler Taira no Kiyomori spent 10 months excavating this new shipping route. The strait is approximately 90 meters wide and is known for its strong currents, making it difficult for vessels to pass through. However, even today, about 700 boats of various sizes cross it daily, allowing visitors to enjoy the unique scenery of the Setouchi town.
The "Onodō Bridge" and "Second Onodō Bridge," which connect Kogoya-cho to Onodō-cho, are painted in vermilion, said to match the color of the Itsukushima Shrine built by Taira no Kiyomori. Next to the Onodō Bridge in Kogoya-cho is "Onodoshin Park," where approximately 2,300 cherry blossom trees bloom from late March to early April, and between late April and early May, around 8,300 azaleas in red and white are in full bloom.
It is recommended to take a stroll through the streets of Onodō-cho, where you can find cafes, bakeries, and youth hostels converted from old traditional houses in the quaint seaside town. Take your time to relax and experience the leisurely lifestyle of Onodō-cho.
