Details

Osaka Tenmangu is a shrine dedicated to the famous god of learning, Sugawara no Michizane. Since ancient times, it has been referred to as "Tenjin of Tenma" by the people of Osaka. Established in 949 (the 3rd year of the Tenryaku era), it is always crowded with students from all over the country during exam seasons. The oldest structure within Osaka Tenmangu is the "Daishogun Shrine," which is a well-known energy spot. It is said to be a place where Sugawara no Michizane prayed during his exile to Dazaifu. Incidentally, the origin of Osaka Tenmangu is said to be due to a series of disasters that occurred in the capital after Michizane's death, prompting Emperor Murakami to build the shrine to appease his vengeful spirit. The main highlight of Osaka Tenmangu is the "Tenjin Matsuri," held annually from late June to July 25, which is one of Japan's three major festivals with over 1,000 years of history. Nearly 3 million visitors from both domestic and international locations attend each year, making it Osaka's premier summer festival. On July 24, the solemn "Hoko Nagashi" ceremony, which marks the origin of the festival, is held to pray for health, disaster relief, and favorable weather for the region. Particularly noteworthy is the "Riku Dōgyo," a procession of about 3,000 people that takes place in the vicinity of Osaka Tenmangu on the final day, July 25, as well as the "Fune Dōgyo," where approximately 100 boats are set adrift on the great river at night. The climax of the festival is the moment when the "Hanabi" (fireworks) are launched, transforming the night sky over the river into a fantastical world illuminated by the fireworks.
