About Osu Kannon
Guarding the Osu Shopping District and the surrounding community, the most important Kannon sacred site in Nagoya.
Details
Osu Kannon is a special temple of the Shingon sect, Jizō branch, officially named "Hokuyama Shinpukuji Hōshōin." It originated in Hashima City, Gifu Prefecture, and was relocated to its current location in Nagoya by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Osu Kannon is also known as one of the "Three Great Kannon of Japan," alongside Asakusa Kannon in Tokyo and Tsu Kannon in Mie. Hotei, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Nagoya, is enshrined here. The Osu Library houses approximately 15,000 precious volumes, including a copy of the Kojiki, which is designated as a national treasure.
The main hall, which enshrines the principal deity "Shō Kannon," is a significant attraction of Osu Kannon. The temple was burned down twice during the tumultuous Meiji period, known as the "Osu Great Fire," and during the Nagoya air raids in World War II. The current main hall was completed in 1970 after renovations. On either side of the Nio Gate, there are statues of the Nio guardians, protecting the temple grounds from evil.
Throughout the year, various ceremonies and events are held, such as "Hatsumode" (New Year’s visit) on January 1, the "Takarabune Parade" on Setsubun (February 3), and the "Fukushin Exorcism Ritual," which has been passed down since the Muromachi period. On the 18th and 28th of each month, lively antique markets are held on "Ennichi" (auspicious days).
To the east of Osu Kannon is the Osu shopping district, a bustling area filled with various restaurants, shops, vintage clothing stores, and electronics shops.
Highlights
