About Ota Black Park

The park, located in a quiet residential area, becomes quite popular during the night lighting of the autumn leaves season.

Details

The former residence of music critic Otaguro Motohiro (1893-1979) has been transformed into a public park in Suginami, Tokyo, and was opened for use in 1981. Thirty percent of the park's area was donated by Otaguro, and a strolling garden was developed in accordance with his wish to "create a park." The Otaguro Studio House, built in 1933, is a rare Western-style building from that time, now converted into a "Memorial Hall" (which has been registered as a tangible cultural property of Japan; the second floor is usually not open to the public). There are also highlights such as a tea house in the Sukiya architectural style. The seasonal landscapes are also quite remarkable, with cherry blossoms in spring and hydrangeas in early summer bringing joy to visitors. Notably, there are 27 ginkgo trees over a hundred years old, along with giant zelkova and red pine trees. From late November to early December, over 60 trees change color, and nighttime illuminations are held. By the pond near the gazebo, one can enjoy the dreamlike beauty of the autumn leaves reflected on the water's surface.

Highlights

The park transformed from the former residence of music critic Ota Heihachiro features a circular garden, a memorial hall, and a tea room, among other attractions worth visiting. It is a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves in Tokyo, with nighttime illuminations held from late November to early December.
