About Paper Museum (Museum of Paper)
A rare comprehensive museum dedicated to paper in the world.
Details
The Paper Museum, located in Tokyo, houses over 40,000 pieces of data and 15,000 books. Established in 1950 (Showa 25) as a paper-making company, it has become a modern paper factory and is known as the "birthplace of Western paper" in Oji, Kita Ward, Tokyo. The permanent exhibition introduces the history, culture, and industry related to both traditional Japanese washi and modern Western paper commonly used in daily life. It also showcases real paper-making equipment and a half-size model of the world's first paper-making machine.
In the exhibition room "Paper Classroom," visitors can touch various types of paper or take on challenges for experiential learning to understand the basics of paper and its reuse. The library on the first floor of the museum offers access to books and magazines related to paper. Additionally, the museum frequently hosts a variety of rich activities related to paper, including the "Ukiyo-e Hand Printing Demonstration," which showcases traditional Edo-period craftsmanship, and the "Paper Making Classroom," which uses milk cartons as raw materials.
