About Pontocho (Pontocho Street)
Since the Edo period, the most bustling area in Kyoto.
Details
Ponto-cho is located between the Kamo River and the Takase River, and is a north-south oriented street that was originally an island in the Kamo River. In the early Edo period, the Takase River was excavated, and after connecting with Fushimi, it gradually prospered as a logistics hub. By the late Edo period, it had become a bustling entertainment district, and during the Meiji period, performances of "Kamo River Dance" were held to promote the area, further solidifying its status as a geisha district.
The name Ponto-cho is believed to derive from the Portuguese words "ponta" (meaning "tip" or "point") and "ponte" (meaning "bridge"). Another theory suggests that the area’s shape, surrounded by two rivers and resembling a drum, led to its name from the drum sound "ponto." Today, from Shijo Street to Sanjo, the charming narrow alleys are lined with various types of dining establishments. At night, with the lights from the shops illuminating the area, Ponto-cho becomes even more enchanting.
The "Kamo River Dance," held annually from May 1 to 24, takes place at the Ponto-cho Kaburenjo, where visitors can enjoy the elegant and graceful performances of the maiko up close.
Highlights
In the alleys, there are numerous dining establishments that have been converted from early brothels and tea houses. There is a wide variety of restaurants to choose from, depending on the situation. The "Kamo River Dance," where maiko showcase their splendid performances, is held every May. During the summer, some shops set up cool seating along the Kamo River, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere filled with Kyoto style.
