📖 Details

Aoshima in Miyazaki Prefecture is a small island with a circumference of 1.5 kilometers, connected to the mainland by a bridge approximately 150 meters long. The entire island is the grounds of Aoshima Shrine, which was considered a sacred island in the past, prohibiting general public access. The area is covered with tropical and subtropical plants such as palm trees, exuding the unique southern charm of Miyazaki. The shrine was established before the year 820, making its history quite ancient. It is said to be the backdrop of the myth of Umi Sachi Hiko and Yama Sachi Hiko, with the main deities being Yama Sachi Hiko's Hikohikohitomikoto and his wife Toyotama-hime. It is a well-known power spot for forming connections, attracting a large number of domestic and international tourists to worship. The famous wave-like rock formations surrounding the island, known as "Oni no Senbai," are also a must-see attraction, designated as a national natural monument along with the plants and rocks. Additionally, among over 200 species of plants, 27 species of tropical and subtropical plants have been designated as a national special natural monument due to their unique habitat. Visitors can enjoy water activities such as kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding at the beach, and there are many sightseeing spots nearby, making it a leisurely destination where one can spend an entire day.
