About Qiyun Pavilion

It is a well-known building that was also loved by cultural figures of the Showa era, and it ranks among the "Three Great Villas of Atami."

Details

Built in the 8th year of the Taisho era (1919), this modern villa is renowned alongside the Mitsubishi group's "Iwasaki Family Villa" (not open to the public) and the now non-existent "Sumitomo Group Villa," making it one of the "Three Great Villas of Atami." In 1947, it was transformed into an inn, beloved by notable literary figures of the Showa era such as Yamamoto Yuzo, Shiga Naoya, Tanizaki Junichiro, Dazai Osamu, Funabashi Seiichi, and Takeda Taijun. In 2000, ownership was transferred to Atami City, which renovated it into a cultural and tourism hub, welcoming numerous visitors. The expansive grounds of approximately 3,000 tsubo feature many highlights worth seeing. The architecture is in a traditional Japanese style, with the "Kirin" and "Daiho" structures being simple yet showcasing the latest construction techniques of the time. The Western-style building "Kongō" has a Roman-style bathroom, while "Tamaki," another Western-style building, includes a sunroom decorated in the Art Deco style, allowing visitors to closely experience the essence of Taisho-era architecture. Additionally, there is a garden designed with a gentle slope, featuring a pond and a strolling path, offering beautiful natural scenery that heals the heart throughout the seasons. After enjoying the famous architecture and gardens, it is recommended to take a break at the café, which was converted from a bar during its inn days. In this space filled with a retro atmosphere, visitors can appreciate the beautiful garden views while enjoying a leisurely and relaxing moment.
