About Rice Mound
Known as "Aso's Dimple," this small volcano stands about 80 meters tall.
Details
Mizuki is a conical volcano located at the foot of Mount Kinshijima and is one of the "Aso Five Peaks" that make up Mount Aso. This small mountain, approximately 80 meters high, was formed during a volcanic eruption 3,300 years ago. The entire hillside is covered with lush green grasslands, with vibrant greenery in spring and summer, golden hues in autumn, and a blanket of white snow in winter, each presenting a different beauty.
The name Mizuki is said to originate from a legend about the volcano. According to the legend, the god of Aso, Kenbanryu no Mikoto, piled harvested rice into a small mountain, and the depression at the top was created for scooping out rice to distribute to the poor. The depression at the summit resembles a dimple, which is why it is also referred to as "Aso's Dimple."
In the past, it was possible to hike up the mountain, but now entry is prohibited to protect the landscape. There is no observation deck in the area, and visitors can generally only enjoy the scenery from their cars along the way. However, along the "Aso Panorama Line," there are several viewing spots and designated parking areas available.
