📝 Introduction
A historic hot spring established about 1300 years ago.
📖 Details
Legend has it that "Shikanoyu," the origin of Nasu Onsen, was established in the early 7th century, about 1300 years ago. It is said that a deer, injured while being hunted, wandered deep into the mountains and was discovered healing in the hot springs, which is how it got its name "Shikanoyu." This is the oldest hot spring in Tochigi Prefecture, with historical records tracing back to the 10th year of the Tenpyō era (738 AD).
The bathing area retains the atmosphere of a hot spring healing facility, featuring six types of baths with temperatures ranging from 41°C to 48°C (the women's section has only five types due to the absence of the 48°C bath). Visitors can choose their preferred bath to soak in. Before entering the baths, there is a rare bathing method called "kaburiyu (かぶり湯)," where hot spring water is scooped with a ladle and poured over the head. Adults are required to do this about 200 times, while children do it around 100 times. It is said to help prevent heat rash and nausea, and relieve headaches and shoulder stiffness. Due to the high temperature of the hot spring water, it is recommended to soak for about 15 minutes at a time, approximately four times a day.
The entire facility is constructed of wood, creating a rustic atmosphere that blends well with the relaxing surrounding scenery, making it a popular destination for experiencing Japan's original landscapes on a day trip to the hot springs.
