🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
A temple that is deeply revered for blessing the healing of eye ailments.
📖 Details
In the Heian period, in 806, the temple was built by Enchin, the founder of Kiyomizu-dera. Located in the mountains of Nagaokakyō, it is known as the "Kiyomizu of the West." It has been believed since ancient times that the "Dokko Water" that springs from within the temple grounds can cure eye diseases, which has made it a place of faith for those suffering from such ailments since the Heian period. Yōgaku-ji has deep connections with the emperor and the nobility, and its treasure house contains items gifted by the imperial family and historically significant figures.
In late April, visitors can enjoy the fresh greenery, while hydrangeas bloom from early June to early July, and beautiful autumn leaves can be seen from mid-November to early December. Approximately 5,000 hydrangeas bloom on the grounds, making it one of the largest displays in Kyoto. In June, the "Yagyu Kannon Hydrangea Week" is held, allowing visitors to walk from the study hall to the inner sanctum, and then stroll along the corridor and main hall to the approach of the inner sanctum to enjoy the flowers.
In recent years, the seasonal flower water offerings have also made it one of the most popular photo spots in the Kansai region. In 2017, it began decorating the water offering area with seasonal flowers under the concept of "a sacred place to experience the four seasons," allowing visitors to enjoy different experiences with each visit. Additionally, on the 17th of each month, the eleven-faced thousand-armed thousand-eyed Kannon is open for public viewing, attracting many worshippers.
