About Ryusendo Cave
One of Japan's three major limestone caves, designated as a national natural monument.
Details
Ryūsendō, located at the foot of Mount Uryūra, is a natural limestone cave and is one of the "Three Great Limestone Caves of Japan." The total length currently known is 4,088 meters, with 700 meters open to visitors.
Limestone caves are formed by the erosion of limestone over many years by water. The mysterious space created by nature, along with the underground lakes formed by the spring water within the cave, are must-see attractions. Currently, eight underground lakes have been discovered, three of which are open to the public. Investigations within the cave are still ongoing, and it is said that it will take some time to fully understand its entirety.
Additionally, five species of bats inhabit the cave, and during certain periods, you can see bats hanging upside down in the passages. By following the straight passage known as "Hyakuken-rōka," you can reach the "Bat Cave," where the bats reside. It is quite rare for five species of bats to coexist in Japan.
Continuing further down, there is the "Chōmei no Izumi" (Spring of Longevity), which is said to grant an additional three years of life with just one sip of its water. You can see various stalactites, including the "Ryū no Fuchi" (Dragon's Abyss), which is 10 meters deep, the "Kameiwa" (Turtle Rock) resembling a turtle shell, and the fantastical "Tsuki no Kyōden" (Moon Palace). In addition, you can catch a glimpse of the beautiful underground lakes, including the "Daiichi Chitei-ko" (First Underground Lake), known for its Dragon Blue color.

The temperature inside the cave remains around 10 degrees Celsius throughout the year, so it is recommended to wear long-sleeved clothing. During periods of frequent rainfall, water may drip from the ceiling inside the cave, so it is advisable to bring rain gear. There are four sets of stairs, some with over 200 steps. Please adjust your visit according to your physical fitness. Admission tickets to Ryusendo Cave allow free entry to the "Ryusendo New Cave Science Museum."
