About Sanzu River Gorge
The valley named after the "Sanzu River," which separates the realms of yin and yang, is adorned with stunning maple leaves.
Details
Kawaramoe Hell, along with Aomori Prefecture's "Osorezan" and Toyama Prefecture's "Tateyama," is known as one of Japan's three great spiritual sites. Since ancient times, many ascetics and worshippers have visited this area. The "Sanzu River Gorge," located at the entrance of Kawaramoe Hell, is a scenic spot characterized by its sheer cliffs.
The Sanzu River Bridge, which spans the gorge, is approximately 40 meters high. From the viewpoint at the center of the bridge, looking down into the gorge offers a breathtaking and expansive view that can leave one weak in the knees. This landscape perfectly embodies the name "Sanzu River," which signifies the boundary between the realms of the living and the dead. At the entrance of the bridge, there are four stone statues: Enma Daiō, Taizan Daiō, Enmei Jizō, and Gasshō Jizō, which seem to guard this land as they sit here. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, and autumn is particularly popular for its vibrant foliage, attracting large numbers of tourists and photographers during peak season.
Next to the Sanzu River Bridge, there is a parking lot and restrooms, allowing those who wish to take in the scenery to park their vehicles conveniently.
