About Sapporo Maruyama Zoo

The first zoo in Hokkaido, the "Polar Bear Pavilion," where you can observe the swimming姿 of polar bears, is a must-see in the park.

Details

In 1950, the mobile zoo from Tokyo's Ueno Zoo received unprecedented acclaim during its event in Sapporo, leading to the establishment of the first zoo in Hokkaido the following year, which is the "Maruyama Zoo." Initially positioned as a children's park, the zoo gradually improved its animal exhibits and facilities, and today it has become a beloved destination for both tourists and locals, housing and showcasing over 180 species of nearly a thousand animals. One of the main attractions is the "Polar Bear Pavilion," where visitors can observe the swimming姿 of polar bears through an underwater tunnel. The pool separates the polar bears from the seals, and if you're lucky, you might catch a polar bear intently watching the seals. Additionally, there is the "Elephant House," where you can observe elephants swimming and their natural behaviors, along with many other facilities that allow for the observation of animals in their natural ecology. Other highlights include red pandas and Bengal tigers in the Asian section, where you can see the animals living comfortably within the spacious facilities. With a focus on animal welfare, the breeding environment here allows visitors to gain insights into the animals' natural habits through observation.

Highlights

Born from the highly acclaimed mobile zoo, it is the first zoo in Hokkaido. There are several facilities to observe the natural ecology of animals, and the "Polar Bear Exhibit" is particularly popular. The guided tours related to animals and environmental issues are well-designed, making it a great learning place for children to understand animals. In 2022, Japan's first definition of a zoo was established with the "Sapporo City Zoo Ordinance," dedicated to wildlife conservation activities.
