About Sendai Kaleidoscope Museum
A globally rare kaleidoscope-themed art museum.
Details
Opened in 1999 on the Nikko Street near "Akiu Onsen", this is a rare kaleidoscope-themed art museum in the world. The museum houses a rich collection and various exhibitions of kaleidoscopes, conveying the charm of these fascinating objects to the public.
The three-story facility includes an art museum shop, an experience area, and an exhibition area, making it an experiential art museum. It not only showcases unique works and collectors' items but also allows visitors to see, touch, and even create their own kaleidoscopes. Additionally, the museum displays ceramic works by Tsuji Teruko, who is celebrated as Japan's first female ceramic artist and served as the honorary director of the museum.
There are various options for the kaleidoscope-making experience, including the "Simple Kaleidoscope," where you can complete your creation by placing chosen beads into your preferred tube, and the "Dress-Up Kaleidoscope," which involves placing beads into a small bottle of about 3.5 cm to create a traditional oil bottle kaleidoscope. This is a great opportunity to challenge yourself and create a one-of-a-kind kaleidoscope.
