About Seto Museum of Art
Learn about the long history of Seto pottery and experience the former Seto Town.
Details
Seto ware ceramics produced in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, and its surrounding areas are famous worldwide not only for tea utensils like "Ko-Seto" and "Kō-Seto," but also for various everyday items that are quite popular. The Seto kiln, established in the latter half of the 10th century, is known as one of Japan's six ancient kilns, and Seto Town once thrived as a major center of ceramic production. The Seto Museum of Ceramics serves as a facility to promote Japanese ceramic culture.
The second floor of the Seto Museum of Ceramics has been transformed into an exhibition space that feels like stepping back into 20th-century Seto Town. By recreating the old Owari Seto Station, pottery factories, coal kilns, and chimneys, it introduces the history, culture, and traditions of Seto, allowing visitors to experience the prosperity that Seto once enjoyed due to its ceramics. The third floor features a large panoramic exhibit that spans 30 meters, showcasing the historical changes of Seto ceramics over more than 1,000 years.
On the first floor, the "Seto Monozukuri Plaza SETO MONO SHOP" is a direct sales store for Seto ceramics. The shop displays ceramic products from various kilns based on characteristics such as glaze and painting. It offers everything from authentic tea ceremony utensils to Western-style tableware, making it ideal for personal use or as gifts.
