About Shinojima
A day trip is also convenient! Enjoy your holiday on the charming outlying islands.
Details
Shinojima is an island off the Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, about an hour and a half from Nagoya. It is possible to make a day trip, but there are many inns and hotels on the island, so it is recommended to stay overnight.
A must-try when visiting Shinojima is the local fresh seafood. The tiger pufferfish caught in the winter seas is of excellent quality and its delicious taste rivals that of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Other seafood includes sweet sea bream, the top catch in Japan, the shirasu (whitebait), tender octopus, fluffy anago (conger eel), and rich oysters, all available fresh throughout the year.
There are also plenty of marine activities. Fishing enthusiasts can head to the fishing pond "Shinojima Fishing Paradise," where they can catch sea bream, yellowtail, and horse mackerel. For those looking to experience real fishing, boat fishing targeting large halibut and sea bream is also very popular. In the summer, visitors can enjoy swimming in the expansive white sandy beaches.
There are many historical sites, and leisurely walks can be quite enjoyable. In the evening, during sunset, you can visit the Uta Monument Park on the west side of the island, where the view of the sunset is recognized as one of the "Top 100 Sunsets in Japan."
On Shinojima, there are also shrines such as the Shinto shrine and Hachioji Shrine, which were rebuilt using old materials from Ise Jingu during the Shikinen Sengu (periodic transfer of the shrine). These shrines have a deep connection to Ise Jingu. Every year on October 12, the "Onbe Tai Hounou-sai (おんべ鯛奉納祭)" is held, where the sea bream caught on the island is salted and offered to the deities, enveloping the entire island in the vibrant atmosphere of the festival.
Spend a special moment in the highlight-filled Shinojima.
