About Sima Qiao Memorial Hall
The museum designed by Tadao Ando, located adjacent to the residence of Ryotaro Shiba.
Details
The Shiba Ryotaro Memorial Museum was established in November 2001 in a residential area of Higashi-Osaka City. Adjacent to Shiba Ryotaro's residence, it was designed by the architectural master Tadao Ando and is a structure made of poured concrete. The building consists of one basement level and two above-ground levels, featuring a minimalist design with gentle curves. Notably, the three-story bookcase designed by Tadao Ando, which reaches a height of 11 meters, is a remarkable highlight.
In the courtyard, designed based on the shrubs that Shiba Ryotaro favored, a desk is adorned with a fountain pen and colored pencils used for his writing, all placed there in a way that allows visitors to closely observe Shiba Ryotaro's study. Visitors can also appreciate his literary works written in his own hand.
In addition to biannual special exhibitions, the hall, which seats about 150 people, hosts lectures, concerts, film screenings, and other events. Furthermore, there is a large collection of original works featuring calligraphy and paintings by Shiba Ryotaro himself.
