About Southeast Botanical Garden

Japan's largest outdoor botanical garden.

Details

The Southeast Botanical Garden in Okinawa is home to approximately 1,300 species and over 50,000 plants, making it the largest outdoor botanical garden in Japan. It showcases the beauty of a tropical paradise throughout the four seasons. Within the grounds, the "Water Park" and "Botanical Garden" allow visitors to admire rare tropical and subtropical plants. Notable species include the "baobab tree," which is primarily found in the savannah regions of Africa, and the lotus flowers that bloom in June and July, releasing a sweet fragrance at sunrise. Additionally, the "dragon blood tree," which can reach heights of 10 to 20 meters, is among the many plants that are rarely seen in Japan. The Alexander palm trees planted along the garden's tree-lined avenues can only be cultivated in greenhouses in Japan, making them a precious species that can only be seen here. In addition to the botanical garden, there is a face-to-face contact area where visitors can encounter animals such as capybaras and squirrel monkeys, as well as restaurants that serve dishes made from local ingredients. The garden also has a shuttle bus for easy and convenient movement. Guided tours accompanied by staff are available but require prior reservation, so it's advisable to check in advance. Furthermore, a large nighttime illumination event is held every year in late October, making it a highlight of the county.
