About Special Viewing of the Red Maple Leaves (Hōtoku-ji)

A must-see! The enchanting view of autumn leaves reflected on the floor.

Details

Baotokuji Temple is located in the outskirts of Tōgyū City, surrounded by mountains on three sides. It is a Zen Buddhist temple founded around 1450 (during the Muromachi period in Japan). The temple is famous for its "Yuka Momiji," where the maple leaves are reflected on the bright, mirror-like floor. During special exhibitions held in spring, summer, and autumn, visitors can enter the main hall, which is usually closed to the public, to admire the stunning beauty of the "momiji" reflected on the equivalent of 28 tatami mats. The autumn special opening exhibition runs from mid-October to late November, which is the best time to view the more than 100 maple trees within the temple grounds. The sight of red and golden maple leaves reflecting on the floor is dazzling. During this period, there will also be a limited evening exhibition (reservation and fee required). The "Yuka Momiji" illuminated by lights is filled with dreamlike colors, presenting a magical scene different from that of the daytime. In spring, a special exhibition themed around fresh greenery, "Yuka Momiji Special Opening," is held. The polished, shining floor reflects the bright green leaves and tender branches sparkling in the sunlight, creating an incredibly beautiful scene that seems to transport visitors into a tranquil and mysterious world. Additionally, spring is also the time when peonies bloom most beautifully. Visitors can stroll through the temple's garden and experience a floral world resembling a paradise. The "Yuka Momiji" reflecting the lush greenery and blue sky. The "Summer Yuka Momiji Special Opening" is shorter in duration and takes place during the annual summer event, the "Fuurin Matsuri" (Wind Chime Festival). Colorful wind chimes hang on both sides of the path leading to the main hall. As visitors walk through the wind chime path into the main hall, they will see the summer Yuka Momiji reflected on the floor, surrounded by greenery and wind chimes. During the summer Wind Chime Festival, the path is lined with wind chimes inscribed with people's wishes. There are very few places in Japan where one can see the "Yuka Momiji" landscape, and since Baotokuji Temple allows visitors to take photos and upload them to Instagram, the temple is always crowded with people during the "Yuka Momiji" exhibitions. Although there may be long lines to wait, it is definitely worth it to witness this precious scenery. It is important to note that the Yuka Momiji can only be seen during the special opening exhibitions in spring, summer, and autumn. Be sure to check the detailed information in advance on the official Baotokuji Temple website. The path leading to the main hall offers a serene and elegant Zen atmosphere, framed by the distant mountains.
